چکیده
Abstract Hypoxia is a widespread environmental stressor that shapes fish physiology and morphology. Plasticity in traits improve oxygen uptake delivery or reduce requirements may be critical for to cope with fluctuating dissolved (DO) conditions their natural habitat adapt new environments. In this study, we characterized suite of morpho-physiological respiratory naturally hypoxia-acclimated weakly electric mormyrid fish, Petrocephalus degeni , quantified plasticity response long-term normoxia exposure. We captured P. from hypoxic swamp (PO 2 = 2.43 ± 1.85 kPa) surrounding Lake Nabugabo, Uganda, acclimated them > 16 up 75 days. At various time points throughout exposure, measured blood hemoglobin lactate concentration, gill size, routine metabolic rate (RMR), regulation index (RI), tension ( P crit ). found 62–75 days exposure significantly reduced concentration (− 17%), filament length 14%), hemibranch area 18%), whereas RMR, RI, showed no significant change. Our results support earlier findings swamp-dwelling are well adapted life chronic severe hypoxia indicate they possess limited capacity phenotypic change DO environment.

Comparative uptake, bioaccumulation, and gill damages of inorganic mercury in tropical and nordic freshwater fish.
This paper reports comparative results on the bioaccumulation of inorganic mercury and resulting gill damages in the tropical fish, Trichomycterus zonatus, and a nordic species, Salvelinus alpinus, using radioisotope 203Hg techniques and scanning electron microscopy. Uptake of inorganic Hg from water was much more important in T. zonatus than in S. alpinus and the Hg concentration in S. alpinus...
متن کاملEffect of hypoxia, normoxia and hyperoxia conditions on gill histopathology in two weight groups of beluga (Huso huso)
The influence of dissolved oxygen concentration on gill histopathology of great sturgeon (Huso huso) was evaluated in two weight classes (initial weight 280.9?49.2 g and 1217.9?138.1 g respectively). Oxygen treatments included hypoxia (2-3 mg/l), normoxia (5-6 mg/l) and hyperoxia (9-10 mg/l). The fish were acclimated to experimental tanks for one week then randomly distributed into 9 tanks i...

1. Exposure of 10 R3-R13 neurones to a 115-min period of hypoxia resulted in depolarization of their membrane potentials (EM) from a mean of -46-9 ± 3-1 to-20-8 ± 4-4mV (S.E.). 2. Intracellular potassium ion activities (a^) decreased significantly from 118-9 ± 5 1 to 67-7 ± 8-5rnM-K. This is equivalent to a change in EKirom — 70-9 mV to —54-5 mV, which is insufficient to account for depolarizat...
متن کاملPolymerized bovine hemoglobin decreases oxygen delivery during normoxia and acute hypoxia in the rat.
Hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOC) have been primarily studied for blood loss treatment. More recently infusions of HBOC in euvolemic subjects have been proposed for a wide variety of potential therapies in which increased tissue oxygenation would be beneficial. However, compared with the exchange transfusion models to study blood loss, less is known about HBOC oxygen delivery and vasoacit...
